| | Introduction Religion in China has been characterized by pluralism since the beginning of Chinese history. The Chinese religions are family-oriented and, unlike Western religions, do not demand the exclusive adherence of members. By some estimates Christian churches, most of them underground, now have roughly 70 million members (2008). For decades, most of China's Christians worshiped in underground churches known as house churches that avoided attention for fear of arrest on various charges such as disturbing public order. |
